Incorporate politics, debatable ethics and love in any movie not necessary focused on a subject of interest of the majority, and you have a winner. People love to watch these subjects and values being fought for in movies (e.g. since they fear too much to do it themselves.)
e.g. The Prestige. I wasn't interested in magic or that kinda fake stuff, but appreciated the passion that the characters had in the art and how they fought for what they love in their different ways and value system.
